Violet Parr - Force Field Practice Wants to Take a Hit

The short version
  • Resist +1 reduces damage dealt to her by challenges and damage effects, per rule 8.8.1, but it does nothing against effects that put damage directly.
  • At 2 ink, 3 strength, and 2 willpower, she holds ground better than her willpower alone suggests, because most 2-willpower characters fold to a single point of damage.
  • Fire the Cannons! at 1 ink deals damage, which Resist reduces by 1, so she survives it. Effects that put damage ignore Resist entirely (rule 1.9.2.2).
  • She competes in a very crowded slot. Hudson - Determined Reader costs the same ink and has 4 willpower. Know why you're choosing her over him.

Resist is one of those keywords that sounds tougher than it is until you understand exactly when it applies. Violet Parr - Force Field Practice has it. Let's talk about what that actually means at the table.

Her text reads: "Resist +1 (Damage dealt to this character is reduced by 1.)" Rule 8.8.1 says the same thing formally: "Resist +N means 'Damage that would be dealt to this character or location is reduced by N.'" One point. Every time. And the parenthetical on the card spells out the limit: it only touches damage that is dealt.

That distinction matters more than it looks.

What Resist actually stops

Fire the Cannons! deals 2 damage. Against Violet Parr - Force Field Practice, it deals 1. That's the whole interaction. A card that would trade evenly with a 2-willpower character now needs a follow-up.

Same goes for Chomp! at 1 ink, and most of the thirty damage sources on the vulnerable list: they all deal their damage, so Resist shaves one off every time.

But here's the catch. Rule 1.9.2.2 defines "put" damage as "placing a number of damage counters on a character or location as a result of an effect that puts damage on them." Resist does not apply to put damage.

If an effect puts 2 damage on her, she takes 2. Full stop. The card text says "dealt", the rule confirms it, and any effect that sidesteps that word sidesteps Resist entirely.

She's still vulnerable to a straight banish. Goofy - Klutzy Skier removes characters unconditionally at 3 ink and does not care what her Resist value is. Resist is not a ward, not a protection ability. It's a tax on damage. And some removal doesn't pay taxes.

Where 3 strength does the real work

She's a 3-strength character at 2 ink. That's the same stat as Shere Khan - Keen-Eyed Hunter, Black Heron - Real Bad Egg, and Gaston - Frightful Bully in their respective inks. Strength of 3 at this cost is not unusual. What she brings on top of it is the effective durability.

In a challenge, she deals 3 damage and absorbs Resist before the opponent's strength reaches her. Against a 2-strength challenger, she takes 1 damage after Resist, survives, and the other character is gone. That's a clean trade that a straight 2-willpower character without Resist cannot make.

The rival she has to beat

Hudson - Determined Reader costs the same 2 ink, has the same 1 lore, and has 4 willpower. No Resist. Against a 2-strength challenger, he takes 2 damage and survives with 2 willpower remaining.

Against Fire the Cannons!, he takes 2 and survives with 2 willpower. He's harder to remove by brute force, and his raw stat line is honest about why.

Violet Parr - Force Field Practice wins the head-to-head only in specific conditions. Against a field full of 1-damage pings and 1-strength side threats, Resist turns those from "trade" into "free pass". Against a Goofy - Klutzy Skier, both characters are equally banished and the comparison collapses.

Black Heron - Real Bad Egg is also Steel, also 2 ink, and runs 3 strength with 3 willpower. No Resist. A point more willpower than Violet, one less effective durability against dealt damage.

Speculation: if your local game has a lot of one-damage effects in the mix, Violet Parr - Force Field Practice may edge her out. That's a guess. It depends on what you're expecting to face.

The weakness you will actually hit

Poor Unfortunate Souls at 2 ink returns characters costing 2 or less to their player's hand. She costs 2. She's vulnerable. Begone! at 3 ink does the same for characters costing 3 or less.

Also catches her. Resist doesn't enter the conversation for bounce. The card goes back to your hand, the board position evaporates, and you spent your turn playing her again next round.

That's the real ceiling on how much Resist can do for you. She's durable against incremental damage. She's not durable against the category of effects that don't deal damage at all (rule 1.9.2.1 and 1.9.2.2), and bounce is the most common of those at low ink costs.

Where it stops working

Boo - Energetic Child banishes her outright through a challenge at 3 ink, conditional on the setup but real. Jack-Jack Parr - Incredible Potential at 4 ink banishes characters with 2 willpower or less, and she has exactly 2.

Resist does nothing against a banish trigger. Firefly Swarm at 3 ink banishes characters with 2 willpower or less conditionally as well. She sits right at the threshold.

This is the line that bites. Her willpower is 2. A cluster of banish effects target that exact number. Resist doesn't raise her willpower, and the cards that check willpower don't care about Resist at all.

Resist taxes damage. It does not change her willpower, and the cards that check willpower don't care what she absorbs.

What to do with this

Play Violet Parr - Force Field Practice when your Steel deck wants a 2-ink body that survives the first ping without folding and can trade up against low-strength threats.

She's at her best going wide early, where a 1-damage sweep would clear your other characters and she stays. She's at her worst against decks leaning on bounce and banish-by-willpower, where her 2 willpower is the number that banishes her, not anything Resist can intercept.

If you're building the curve and Hudson - Determined Reader is doing the job at 4 willpower, don't force Violet Parr - Force Field Practice in beside him. If your list is already running a ping-heavy opponent in your local scene, try her instead. That's the specific condition where she earns the slot over a statistically fatter rival.
