Here's what's strange about that gap: the cheapest cards in the game and the most expensive ones are often from the same booster pack. Pull a common, it's bulk. Pull an Iconic-treatment version of the right character, and you're holding something worth more than a used car.
So how do you know which you've got?
Rarity is not the whole answer
Every Lorcana card has a rarity, and rarity matters, but treatment matters more. The ten most valuable core-legal cards right now are all Iconic or Enchanted or Special printings.
Mickey Mouse - Brave Little Prince is worth $3,552 as an Iconic. A regular printing of the same character from the same set costs a fraction of that. Same card, different foiling, wildly different number.
The treatment is printed on the card and visible in the card's catalogue listing. If you're holding something that looks unusually shiny or has a different frame style, that's why.
Where the money lives by set
Fabled is the most valuable set in the game right now. Its cards add up to $14,639 across all printings, with an average card worth $56. That average is skewed hard by the Iconics, but it tells you where collector demand is sitting today.
The First Chapter, the original set, comes in second at $9,764 total. Let It Go is its crown jewel at $1,224. Wilds of Unknown and Attack of the Vine! are both around $7,600 to $7,800.
Then there are four sets that have rotated out of Core competitive play: Archazia's Island, Azurite Sea, Reign of Jafar, and Rise of the Floodborn. You can still own and trade those cards, and they're still worth what they're worth on the secondary market today.
But Elsa - Ice Maker, Simba - Pride Protector, Stitch - Experiment 626, and Cinderella - Stouthearted are rotated, so if you're buying to play, those listings don't serve you.

What you actually pay to play
Here's the part that confuses most people. Search results for a card's price usually return the most expensive printing first. That Buzz Lightyear - Jungle Ranger at $3,625 is an Iconic. If you want to play four copies in a deck, you don't need four Iconics. You need the cheapest legal printing, which is a very different price.
Always check which treatment you're looking at before you read the number. A listing that shows $3,625 and a listing that shows $8 can be the same card with different foil stamps.
When you're building a deck, sort by lowest price and filter to non-foil. When you're asking what a pull is worth, find the exact treatment in the catalogue and match it.
The surprise in the numbers
Rise of the Floodborn, now rotated, has an average card value of $9.64. That's the lowest average of any set in the game. The newest set, Fabled, averages $56. The gap between the oldest in-rotation set and the newest is enormous, and it's driven almost entirely by Iconic treatments. Iconic cards didn't exist in the early sets.
That's not a forecast about prices. It's a description of what the catalogue shows today, and prices move. This article reflects what the feed counted today, and a card worth $1,000 this week has been worth $400 in the past. Nobody can tell you where it goes next, and anyone who does is guessing.
The honest version of the check
Look up the exact printing, match the treatment, and read that price. Don't read the page headline number without checking which version it refers to. The difference between a $3 card and a $3,500 card can be invisible to the eye until you know what the frame treatment means.
If you just pulled something and want to know what it's worth, find its full catalogue name including the subtitle, check that the treatment matches what you're holding, and look at the lowest sold listing in the last week rather than the current ask price. Then check the listing treatment one more time before you pay.
