Ursula - Deal Maker costs 3 ink, quests for 1 lore, and carries an end-of-turn inkwell trigger that can turn a single quest into multi-card ramp. The lore is modest. The statline is fine but not exciting. What makes her interesting is BY THE WAY, which under the right conditions stops being "ramp 1" and becomes something stranger.
- 3 ink for 1 lore with 4 willpower. The stats are respectable but not the reason to play her.
- QUITE THE BARGAIN gives a chosen character +1 lore on entry and every time she quests. Passive lore acceleration, no conditions.
- BY THE WAY puts a character into your inkwell at end of turn if she's exerted. Shift or Boost targets turn this from single-card ramp into multi-card ramp (rules 5.1.1.7, 8.10.8.3, 8.10.7).
- She's soft at 2 strength. Goofy - Klutzy Skier banishes her for 3 ink and doesn't care about any of it.
The loop opens here: she's exerted to quest, BY THE WAY triggers at end of turn, and a character goes into your inkwell. Simple enough. But here's the thing that changes the math.
What Shifted characters do to her trigger
When you put a Shifted or Boosted character into your inkwell, every card underneath it goes too. All of them. Exerted, facedown. That's rules 5.1.1.7, 8.10.8.3, and 8.10.7. So "put a character into your inkwell" stops meaning one card if your chosen character has cards stacked under it. That's the part worth building around.
Randall Boggs - Scary Smart, shifted onto something, becomes two cards in the inkwell from a single BY THE WAY trigger.
A Jiminy Cricket - Ghost of Christmas Past or a Mickey Mouse & Minnie Mouse - Adventuring Duo with a card under them does the same. This is speculation about what you're building toward, but the rules verify that it works.
The catch is timing. BY THE WAY reads: "At the end of your turn, if this character is exerted, put chosen character of yours into your inkwell facedown and exerted." She has to survive to end of turn. And the character you're banking has to be yours, on the board, at that moment. Lose either one and the trigger disappears.
QUITE THE BARGAIN is doing quiet work
The first ability is easy to overlook. "When you play this character and whenever she quests, another chosen character gets +1 lore this turn." That's not permanent. It's a single-turn bonus applied on entry and every time she quests.
But if she's questing consistently, that's an extra lore every turn on whatever threat your opponent most wants to answer. It pressures them to deal with two things at once.
She's exerted to quest, the inkwell trigger fires at end of turn, and suddenly the character your opponent ignored all game is gone from the board and in your inkwell.
Stack that with a high-lore character and the tempo math gets uncomfortable for your opponent fast.
What actually stops her
She has 4 willpower, which means she shrugs off Intimidation Tactics at 2 ink, Firefly Swarm at 3 ink, and Red Alert at 4 ink. Those answers only banish a character with 2 strength or less, and she clears that bar easily.
The real answers are cheaper and blunter. Goofy - Klutzy Skier banishes her outright for 3 ink. Begone! at 3 ink bounces her back to hand. If She Doesn't Scare You at 4 ink banishes unconditionally. None of those care about her willpower. None care about her strength.
Damage-based removal is also a problem. He Hurled His Thunderbolt at 4 ink and Ink Explosion at 4 ink both deal enough to finish her without a challenge. She has 4 willpower, not 5, so that bar isn't as high as it looks.
And Boo - Energetic Child at 3 ink can challenge and banish her, because 0 strength is enough to matter here. She isn't a fighter. She questers and ramps. A 3-ink challenge answer is an efficient trade against her.
Where she sits on the curve
At 3 ink for 1 lore, she's competing against a deep pool. Bagheera - Cautious Explorer has 4 willpower and 4 strength for the same cost. Lexington - Small in Stature gets Alert for board flexibility. Those cards do different things. None of them ramp you. None of them stack lore onto another character every turn they quest.
The genuine rival is any effect that accelerates ink on a similar timeline. She does it conditionally, needing to survive exerted to end of turn. That's the honest version of her weakness: she doesn't ramp you the turn you play her.
She needs a turn to quest, then the trigger fires. Against aggressive opponents who answer her immediately, the case for BY THE WAY resolving even once is weaker than it looks.
She's a card that rewards building the board before she arrives. If you have a Shifted character ready, she turns one quest into ramp. If you're playing from behind with an empty board, she's a 2-strength character that quests for 1 lore and gets banished before BY THE WAY ever fires. That probably isn't what you wanted from a Legendary.
Who she's actually for
Ursula - Deal Maker belongs in a deck that already has Shifted characters on the board, wants extra ink, and can protect an exerted character for a full turn rotation. She's not a stand-alone engine. She's a multiplier.
If that describes your build: play her, get a Shifted character onto the board the same turn or the turn before, quest with her, and let BY THE WAY do the work your opponent wasn't watching for.
If your deck doesn't have the Shifted targets to make the trigger hurt, she's a 3-ink 1-lore character with a nice passive, and that probably isn't what you wanted from a Legendary.
