Demona - Scourge of the Wyvern Clan costs 6 ink, exerts every opposing character the moment she lands, and then immediately locks herself. That's the whole tension of the card in one sentence.
But here's the loop you need to understand before you build around her: she locks herself.
- AD SAXUM COMMUTATE exerts every opposing character the moment she lands. That's a full board stall on six ink.
- STONE BY DAY means she rarely quests twice. Her own entry effect draws you to 3 cards, which trips her own lock immediately.
- She's 5 strength and 6 willpower. Damage-based removal doesn't touch her, and she wins most challenges she's pointed at.
- The answers that work are effects that banish any character with no conditions, and strength-based removal. World's Greatest Criminal Mind banishes a character with 5 strength or more for 3 ink, and her 5 strength puts her exactly in range.
Her text reads: "When you play this character, exert all opposing characters. Then, each player with fewer than 3 cards in their hand draws until they have 3." That's the entry. Clean board stall, opponent's whole team sits down.
Then STONE BY DAY kicks in: "If you have 3 or more cards in your hand, this character can't ready."
She draws you up to 3. You now have 3. She's stuck.
The lock she puts on herself
This isn't a bug people are talking around. It's the central design tension of the card, and you need to sit with it before building a deck around her.
Playing her with fewer than 3 cards in hand does not free her, because her own entry effect draws you back up to exactly 3, which is the number STONE BY DAY locks on. She enters ready, so the turn after she lands she can still quest. Keeping her questing after that means spending back down below 3 cards every turn, which cuts against most of what Amethyst wants to do.
Play her with 3 or more cards in hand and she exerts the board, draws you up anyway if you were short, and then stands there. On its own, that's two lore and she won't quest again. That's still useful.
An opponent who wants to challenge her is looking at 5 strength coming back at them, which clears most threats. But you spent 6 ink for one turn of board impact and a stationary wall. That's the honest version of the risk.
What she stops cold, and what stops her
Her 6 willpower means damage-based removal doesn't reach her (rule 1.9.2.1 requires damage counters placed in a challenge or by an effect that deals damage, and nothing in the current damage-removal bracket touches 6 willpower). Banishing her in a challenge means dealing 6 damage, because that is her willpower, so anything with 5 strength or less bounces off.
The real answers are blunter. World's Greatest Criminal Mind banishes a character with 5 strength or more for 3 ink, and she sits exactly on that line. Goofy - Klutzy Skier does the same thing, also at 3 ink.
Gaston - Superior Archer, at 5 ink, can banish characters with 5 strength or more. Point him at her and she's gone. These don't interact with her willpower at all. They just remove her.
Let It Go can put her in the inkwell at 5 ink, removing her without a banish trigger. That's another clean answer. Against an opponent holding any of these, her 6 ink entry becomes a tempo loss.
Where the entry effect actually matters
She doesn't quest every turn. She changes the turn you play her.
That's the correct frame. AD SAXUM COMMUTATE is not a repeatable effect. It happens once. What you're buying with 6 ink is a moment where your opponent's entire board sits down, giving you a free quest turn with everything else on your side.
If you're already ahead on lore when she lands, that one free turn can close a game. If you're behind, the exert buys you one more turn to stabilize. Then she sits there as a 5 strength blocker your opponent has to answer before they can push through.
Speculation here: a deck that deliberately plays her with an empty or near-empty hand, treating her as a finisher rather than an engine, might dodge STONE BY DAY more often than it looks.
If you're at 1 or 2 cards going into turn 6 or 7, she quests for 2 lore and potentially keeps questing. That's a real game plan. It asks you to build differently than Amethyst usually wants.
Who else costs 6 ink for 2 lore
There are 53 characters at 6 ink questing for 2 lore, so the slot is genuinely competitive. Rama - Vigilant Father in Ruby can ready himself whenever you play a character with 5 strength or more, though his own text says he can't quest for the rest of that turn if he does, so it readies him to challenge or to block rather than to score.
Demona is not. Fat Cat - Felonious Feline in Steel brings Resist +1 to make him stickier in challenges. Neither of those cards stalls an entire board on entry. The case for Demona is that trade: one massive moment versus ongoing value.
If your deck wants a threat that changes the board the turn it lands, she earns the slot. If your deck wants something that quests reliably over multiple turns, she probably doesn't.
Play her like a finisher, not a quester
Don't play Demona - Scourge of the Wyvern Clan expecting to quest with her three turns in a row. Plan for one free quest turn across the whole game, plus a large body that demands an answer.
Do not count on a low hand to dodge the lock. She refills you to 3 as she lands, so the quest you are guaranteed is the turn after she arrives, and a second one costs you every card in hand down to two.
If your hand is full when she lands, accept that she's a board-stall piece and point her at the biggest threat your opponent has. Either way, respect the answers: removal that banishes any character with no conditions is everywhere, and no amount of willpower stops it.
